Sam Altman Reclaims OpenAI CEO Role: Formation of New Board Signals Exciting Return
Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, co-founders of OpenAI, the company that created ChatGPIT, will return to the company. A new board is formed with Sam returning as CEO and Greg returning as President. The previous board of OpenAI had fired both of them on Friday.
OpenAI said- ‘We have reached an agreement for Sam Altman to return as CEO with the new board of Brett Taylor (Chairman), Larry Summers and Adam D’Angelo.’ Greg Brockman said that he is returning to OpenAI and will start coding tonight.

November 17: OpenAI founder and CEO Sam Altman was suddenly fired from the company on Friday. The board said it no longer had confidence in Altman’s abilities. Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Mira Murati will now take on the role of interim CEO. Company co-founder and president Greg Brockman was also asked to step down.
November 18: After Sam was fired, many OpenAI employees and investors put pressure on the board to bring him back. Employees and investors wanted Altman to return as CEO and a new board of OpenAI be formed.
November 19: Due to pressure, Altman and Brockman are called to the company’s San Francisco headquarters. Altman shared a photo of himself wearing an OpenAI guest badge with the caption: First and last time I’m wearing one of these.
On November 21, former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear was appointed interim CEO, replacing Meira Muratti. Whereas Sam said that he will join Microsoft. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had given this information. He had told that Sam will lead the company’s new advanced AI research team. Brockman and some other employees will also join.
Employees decide if they want to join Microsoft
Satya Nadella also spoke to CNBC about Altman joining Microsoft. In this, Nadella was asked whether Sam and 700 employees of openAi would join Microsoft? Nadella said- ‘It is to select the OpenAI board, management and employees.
I am open to both options. Microsoft wants to continuously innovate, for this it has entered into an exclusive partnership with OpenAI. Regarding the post on the board of Microsoft’s OpenAI, he said that it is clear that there should be some changes in governance.
OpenAI employees asked the board of directors to step down
After Altman was fired from OpenAI, the employees there asked the company’s board of directors to step down. If this was not done, 505 out of 700 employees had threatened to resign collectively. Board member Ilya Sutskever and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Mira Murati were also among those who threatened to resign.
Over a video call, Ilya Sutskever was the one who told Altman he was being removed. Following Altman’s dismissal, Meera Murati was appointed interim CEO by the board. On Monday, though, the business named Emmett Shear, the former CEO of Twitch, as the acting CEO of OpenAI. The letter threatening to resign had been posted on X by CNN.
