The Decision To Name Rohit As India’s T20 Captain For The SA Tour Was Overturned By The BCCI Selectors After A Video Call Request: Report

It’s highly likely that Rohit Sharma, who hasn’t played since India’s 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final loss to England, will soon return to lead India in Twenty20 international cricket.

The Indian captain, Rohit Sharma, requested a break from the white-ball leg of the tour, but the Indian selection committee, led by former pacer Ajit Agarkar, wanted to return the T20I captaincy to Sharma for the South Africa tour. According to a story in The Indian Express, Rohit participated in the Thursday selection meeting, which was held at a hotel in New Delhi, by video conference from London in order to announce his choice. Despite wanting to return Rohit to the T20I captaincy, the Agarkar-led selection panel granted his request. While on vacation with his family in the UK, Rohit will be back to lead the Indian team during the two-match Test series that begins on December 26.

However, as things stand, it is highly likely that Rohit, who hasn’t played since India’s loss to England in the T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal, will return as captain of the T20I team shortly and will almost certainly lead India to victory in the upcoming World Cup in June. Interestingly, BCCI never released an official statement about India’s T20 captaincy. Since the T20 World Cup in Australia last year, Hardik Pandya has been captaining India in the Twenty20 format, but he was never formally named India’s T20 captain.

It’s possible that Hardik’s injury from the ODI World Cup played a significant part. Since suffering that injury in the October match against Bangladesh, Hardik has not appeared in any games, and it is unclear when he will be back. For the tour of South Africa, he was left out of every squad.

It is acknowledged that should Rohit opt to play the shortest format, Hardik will no longer be the first choice for T20 captaincy in the T20 World Cup the following year.

“Rohit has been offered the T20 captaincy, but he is currently on vacation in the UK and would prefer a longer break following a demanding four months of play until the World Cup concludes. On condition of anonymity, a BCCI source told PTI, “But as captain, he has the utmost respect for the dressing room and if he agrees to lead India in T20 World Cup, he will lead.”

Not just Rohit, a senior member of the World Cup team, was spared from the South Africa tour’s white-ball leg. Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul will captain the national team in Twenty20 Internationals and One-Day Internationals, respectively, following Virat Kohli’s request for a break from limited-overs cricket. Jasprit Bumrah will also be unavailable outside of the Test series.

In fact, Rohit had been reluctant to play the shortest format since he was concentrating on 50-over cricket following the 2022 T20 World Cup.

It’s interesting to note that the majority of players chosen for ODIs don’t play in T20Is or Tests.

Just three players—Shreyas Iyer, Mukesh Kumar, and Ruturaj Gaikwad—have been chosen for each of the three squads.

Ravindra Jadeja has been named the T20 vice-captain for the series, replacing Axar Patel in the squad.

On December 10, the T20I series gets underway.
