On Friday, Union minister Giriraj Singh referred to Nathuram Godse as a “saput” (worthy son) of India and argued that the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi was not an invader like Mughal rulers Babar and Aurangzeb, as he was born in India. Singh, a prominent BJP leader from Bihar, is currently visiting the Bastar region for a two-day meeting with party workers and leaders.
During a conversation with reporters in Dantewada, Bastar, Singh stated that those who proudly associate themselves with being the offspring of Babar and Aurangzeb cannot be considered true sons of Mother India.
The controversy surrounding the 17th-century Mughal emperor has escalated following recent violence in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur, triggered by protests from Hindutva organizations against social media posts allegedly glorifying Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan. While Maharashtra’s home minister, Devendra Fadnavis, called for peace, he defended the aggression, stating that “there is bound to be a reaction if Aurangzeb is glorified.” Fadnavis also remarked that “suddenly, in some districts of Maharashtra, aulad (progenies) of Aurangzeb took birth.”
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi responded to Fadnavis, expressing surprise at the BJP leader’s expertise and challenging him to identify the descendants of Godse.
When asked about Owaisi’s comments, Singh replied, “If he (Godse) was the killer of Gandhi, he (Godse) was also a saput of India. He was born in India. He was not an invader like Babar and Aurangzeb.”
Singh further accused the Bhupesh Baghel-led Congress government in Chhattisgarh of spreading terror and promoting religious conversions.
“The state is witnessing a conspiracy to convert tribals and non-tribals. When the BJP comes to power in the state, we will enact strict laws against conversion,” he declared.
Taking aim at the Congress government in the state, Singh alleged misappropriation of funds allocated to Chhattisgarh under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA).
“Anyone found embezzling MNREGA funds will face investigation and punishment, whether it’s the chief minister or others,” he stated.
In response to Singh’s remarks, the Congress party characterized him as someone known for making nonsensical statements and spreading hatred. They advised him to learn proper behavior in a democratic society and suggested that his frustration stemmed from the BJP’s anticipated loss in the upcoming elections.
RP Singh, Congress spokesperson, commented, “He is known for his nonsensical statements and also for spreading hatred. He should learn how to behave in a democracy. Actually, he got frustrated after visiting Chhattisgarh because his party is badly losing upcoming elections.”
