Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma withdraw from South Africa series

After a tough campaign in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, Indian cricket fans will miss the experienced duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa. Both the legends have requested for a month-long break for rest and recovery before taking on the challenging Test series.

According to Sports Tak, KL Rahul can play the role of captain during the ODI matches to be held from December 17 to 21, who will lead the team in the absence of the veteran duo. However, the final decision on Rahul’s leadership in South Africa is still pending.

The selectors have reportedly held talks with Sharma and Kohli, stressing the importance of participating in bilateral T20I series if they want to be considered for the T20 World Cup 2024. The upcoming T20 World Cup is scheduled to take place in the Caribbean and the United States. The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 appears to be a key factor in determining his T20I future.

Sharma and Kohli’s last appearance in T20Is was in the T20 World Cup 2022, where India lost in the semi-finals against England. Since then, Hardik Pandya has taken charge of the T20I team, while also focusing on both ODI and Test cricket. This strategic decision proved to be successful, as he played a key role in India’s exceptional batting performance throughout the World Cup 2023.

Reportedly, Suryakumar Yadav will lead the T20I team against South Africa due to Pandya’s injury which ruled him out of the World Cup. The timeline of Pandya’s recovery remains uncertain, raising a question mark over his availability for the T20 series against South Africa.
